- Clinical Significance:
- Estrogen receptor (ER) is a nuclear transcription factor which mediates regulatory functions of female sex steroids, including growth, differentiation and function in several target tissues, including the female and male reproduct tract, mammary gland, skeletal and cardiovascular systems. In the breast it is a prognostic marker and target for estrogen antagonist therapy. It is also useful as a diagnostic marker for neoplasms of the female genital tract, and may be seen in a variety of other tumor types.
