- Clinical Significance:
- Basic calponin (calponin-h1) is a 34 kD actin, tropomyosin and calmodulin binding protein thought to be involved in the regulation of smooth muscle contraction. Immunohistochemical expression can be identified in myoepithelial cells, myofibroblasts, and smooth muscle cells throughout the body, as well as in smooth muscle tumors. It is particularly useful in the evaluation of in situ vs. invasive breast carcinoma.
