Clinical Significance:
p57 (cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1C or Kip2) is a nuclear protein involved in cell cycle regulation. Chromosomal rearrangement or abnormal DNA methylation of the gene has been associated with the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. Only the maternal allele of this gene is expressed. This is useful in the evaluation of potential molar pregnancy, as the cytotrophoblast of complete hydatidiform mole will completely lack p57 expression since it is paternally derived.
