Clinical Significance:
Hepatocyte Specific Antigen (aka Hep Par-1, clone OCH1E5) is present in both benign and malignant liver derived tissue. It seems to be associated with hepatocyte mitochondrial membranes, although it may also appear focally in small bowel mucosa. Approximately 70-90% of hepatocellular carcinoma cases are positive, but focal staining may also be seen in GI tract, pancreas, lung and ovary tumors. Hepatoid tumors (e.g. hepatoid yolk sac tumor) can also be positive.
