- Clinical Significance:
- Desmin reacts with an 18 kD rod piece of the intermediate filament protein desmin (53 kD) in skeletal and most smooth muscle cells. The antibody does not appear to recognize other intermediate filament proteins. Desmin appears to maintain the orientation of actin and myosin filaments, and may also play a role in nuclear transcription. It is detected in most tumors of myogenic origin.
