IHC Technician

Position Description

Under general supervision of the IHC lead tech and/or Laboratory Manager, the laboratory technician obtains, and enters records, sets up specimens received from referring Hospitals, Physicians, Clinics, and Ambulatory Surgery Centers for processing of immunohistochemistry testing, and other duties as listed and assigned.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Monitors daily Immunohistochemistry work load by receiving IHC orders and pending lists requests
  • Retrieves specimens, slides or blocks from request to be process by IHC and performs appropriate quality controls checks
  • Assists with laboratory equipment maintenance IHC stainers, coverslippers, ovens and refrigerators
  • Maintains new reagent inventory documentation
  • Performs validation procedures on new antibodies or procedures
  • Maintains and tests control tissue catalog for all antibodies in use
  • Screens all controls and specimens to ensure proper staining
  • Inventories and orders supplies and reagents to ensure adequate stock
  • Follows laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of test examinations
  • Adheres to laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed
  • Follows laboratory’s procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance
  • Maintains and cleans laboratory equipment per manufacturer specifications in accordance with policies and procedures, as well as preventative maintenance schedule
  • Maintains a general working knowledge of laboratory Safety, Infection Control Policies, Regulated Waste Protocols, and Disaster Plan, Chemical and Fire Safety policies and procedures
  • Maintains good interdepartmental and client relations at all times
  • Ensures all corporate safety quality control and quality assurance standards are met
  • Ensures compliance with local, federal, and CLIA regulations
  • Disposes of hazardous waste from the IHC instruments
  • Files slides and blocks in accordance with operational guidelines
  • Puts away supplies and assists in inventory control
  • Keeps IHC laboratory stocked, organized and cleaned
  • Assists with instrumentation maintenance
  • Files unstained slides and maintain proper documentation
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the IHC lead technologist and/or IHC supervisor
  • Conducts business in a responsible manner that complies with all state, CLIA, CAP, OSHA and HIPAA regulations, or Joint Commission as applicable. Provides leadership in daily operations, and ensures employees incorporate these compliance practices into their daily routines

Work Schedule

Hours: Monday – Friday, occasional Saturday

Requirements

High School Diploma

Two years similar experience

Medical terminology

Proficiency with Computer Skills

Satisfactory audio-visual acuity and the ability to speak, read and write English
